International Women’s Day 2024 – #InspireInclusion

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to champion the power of women’s voices and drive positive change.

We spoke to women across the the University who all have one thing in common – an unwavering pursuit of equality. We asked them why they thought it was important to mark IWD, who inspires them and what they love about being a woman.

What did you want to be when you were young?

I always wanted to be a police officer, I joined at 19 and had a 30 year career before joining the University in IT Service Delivery. I had so many differing roles from a Beat, Community and Intelligence Officer to Community Sergeant, Area Control Room Sergeant to national roles as Business Lead in the Digitally Enabled Policing Programme, Test Manager and finally Inspector in a national role in the Communications division. The variety was fabulous, and I always had equal pay!

Why do you think it is important to mark International Women’s Day?

It provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in various fields such as politics, science, arts, business, and obviously, policing and IT. I recognise I stand on the shoulders of the accomplishments of women who have made significant strides in advancing gender equality and breaking barriers. It encourages individuals, organisations, and governments to address issues such as gender-based discrimination, violence against women, unequal access to education and healthcare, and barriers to women’s economic and political participation.

Celebrating International Women’s Day can inspire and empower future generations of women and girls to pursue their dreams and ambitions without limitations. By highlighting the achievements of women role models and showcasing their stories, it encourages others to aspire to leadership positions and pursue careers in male-dominated fields. It also provides an opportunity for men to show their support for gender equality and women’s rights.

What is one thing that you would like to see done to help further equality for women?

Equal pay.
