Education leadership changes
The leadership of postgraduate and undergraduate education and student experience at St Andrews is changing.
Professor Frank Müller, our AVP Provost and Dean of Learning and Teaching, is overdue some very well-earned research leave and will be demitting from his role this summer.
Drawing on his accumulated experience, first as Dean of Arts and Divinity, then as AVP Dean of Learning and Teaching, he has successfully fulfilled the demanding twin roles of Dean of Learning and Teaching and Provost since July 2022.
Alongside considering the task of replacing Frank, there has recently been a review of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Studies. As an outcome of this review a decision has been taken to merge the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies within St Leonards College where it will build on the successful record of the Graduate School as a place where innovative and attractive interdisciplinary PGT programmes are designed and delivered.
The current Director of the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies, Morven Shearer, has kindly agreed to take on additional FTE and add the role of Provost of St Leonards College to her existing portfolio for one year. During 2025-26 she will lead the merger of the two areas of postgraduate activity.
Following the successful template used for the merger of CEED and IEI, the new structure will be soft launched in Summer 2025 and firmed up in Summer 2026. We will advertise for the new combined leadership role of Provost across the University in the early summer of 2026.
The final change is to recruit for the leadership of undergraduate education, and we will be shortly advertising the role of Dean of Learning and Teaching. The appointee will work outwith the Principal’s Office under the leadership of the Proctor and alongside the newly reconfigured Provost and the Director of Student Experience from the Summer of 2025.
